Mariculture in PWS: Webinar Series for Independent Kelp Farmers

Thank you all for joining our last webinar. The Prince William Sound (PWS) Kelp Mariculture series ran October – December 2020 and was coordinated by Thea Thomas, kelp farm applicant and PWS drift gillnet fisherman.

Kelp Hatcheries and Seed Twine Production — “Your hatchery is your destiny”, November 5, 2020. Topics: species selection, sorus (seed) collection, stock transport, incubation and seed twine production. Presenters: Lexa Meyer (Blue Evolution, Kodiak), Tamsen Peeples (Koru and Kelp) and Jeff Hetrick (Alutiiq Pride Shellfish Hatchery, Seward).

Kelp Farm Design and Anchoring Systems, Out-planting and Harvest — November 19, 2020. An exchange of ideas about farm site layout and design, anchoring systems, growing season, harvesting and transport to a processing facility. Presenters: Kendall Barbery (GreenWave, New Haven CT), Markos Scheer (SeaGrove Kelp, Ketchikan) and Joe Arvidson (Blue Wave Futures LLC, Cordova).

Kelp Markets and Processing for Alaska Farmers — December 3, 2020. Processing and markets are absolutely essential to success: no one wants to put kelp seed in the water unless they know they can sell the harvest. Presenters: Melissa Good and Quentin Fong (Alaska Sea Grant) and Riley Smith (AFDF, Wrangell).

The series also covered permitting and licensing. All slide presentations were made available at pwsedd.org.
